Saw this picture of Hemingway and a young woman that I hadn't seen before.

Anyone know who the woman is?

This took some doing over on the Heming-l listserv, but it was fun watching...

"The young woman is Amanda Mae Riley, then 18, of Topeka, Kansas. She is in Cuba interviewing EH for her high school newspaper, the East Topeka High "Defender" but was so excited by meeting her favorite author that she neglected to bring along a pencil. In later life Amanda Mae often made reference to her momentary encounter with the famed celebrity, and I happened to go to high school in suburban Kansas City with her younger son, Ernest "Bumpy" Riley Calhoun who, like the original Ernest, happened to lead the school's rifle team."

I don't know Peter, that story sounded a bit to perfect to be real.

Are you sure Frederic wasn't trying to pull one over on the list?

Well, if you don't like Amanda Rae, there's always Jean Patchett...

Good work Peter!

Did a Google search and found she was also the model on this famous Vogue cover:

Now, wouldn't it be something if Ms. Jean Patchett was, in fact, also Ms. Amanda Mae Riley? A la "Holly Golightly"?
Best,
