I'm planning a trip to London and will be spending a day or two in Paris. Any suggestions on locations, cafes, etc that you've experienced personally while under the influence of Papa. There's just so much to choose from and with such a short time I thought I'd ask.

Thanks!

I can't spell French words.

You can mix Hemingway-related things with sight-seeing by wandering around and near the 6th Arrondissemont.
There is Les Duex Magots and Le Select for a drink right on the Blvd St Germain, and walking up, away from the river, from there you can walk to Montparnasse, especially the Place Contrascarpe. There are three cafes around the small square there and one of the roads off the Place is the rue Cardinal Lemoine where Ernest and Hadly had their first small apartment when they travlered to Paris. There is a marker at street-level.

Walking back down to the river you can pass Shakespeare & Co, not the one at the location at the time he was there but the newer one at 37 rue de la Bûcherie, near Place St. Michel. Then walk across the bridge there (Alexander III?) and onto the Ile de la Cite and wander around Notre Dame. Cross the pedestrian bridge to the Ile St Louis where are usually street performers and a good Dixieland jazz band, and explore the Ile St Louis. You can have a nice lunch at the Brasserie D'Ile St Louis sitting outside if it is warm. Then continue to walk away from the river in to the Marais. There is a Jewish section on the rue des Rosieres, and many people stop for falaffel at L'as de Falaffel, but if it's crowded across the street to MiVaMi. And right around there is Ficklestein's bakery for Jewish baked goods.

Enough to get staarted?

Larry: thanks by the way for joining the Al-Madrid discussion group.
Your question has a pretty easy answer for me, though somewhat lengthy.
If I were in Paris for one day, I'd still probably try and get lunch at Maxim's, then wander about toward "Bull St.-Mich," the intersection of the Boulevard St. Germain and Boulevard St. Michel, where I'd stop for a relaxing cafe au lait or "demi blonde" at Deux Maggots, outside so I could watch people go by as I pretended to read Le Monde. I'd also probably pass L'Ecole Militaire, at some point, cross the Pont Neuf, walk through the Louvre toward the Luxembourg Gardens (which always this time of year or in the Spring remind me of Cezanne's paintings), and find mysef at Lipp's in the evening, passing Eiffel's tower.

No doubt, Pablo won't be there, but it's interesting to see who is, especially near the windows hoping to be seen or better still in the back, hoping not to be seen.

Then a hike up Montmarte, and down again, for exercise.

If it's a Saturday, don't bother going to see Gertrude at her and Leo's place on Rue de Fleurs. She isn't there. I tried....

Also, only go to the Ritz if you're carrying a box of handgrenades for Pablo, or if you need to order 51 very dry martinis for your Fifis...because Charlie isn't there anymore either.

Best,
Hijo

As always thanks! The board wouldn't be the same without you. Papa Doble are making the journey together with our wives. Should be a blast. It's a ways off but Im already excited.

I hope all is well with you and your family. I completed a book of essays based on my cancer experiences as a child. It turned out pretty good and a local author enjoyed it. Im on the second rewrite.

Best,

Larry

It should, indeed, be a blast. Best way to go always is with friends, I think--and wives makes it even more fun.
All well essentially family-wise for me. I'm still standing, (knock on my head), and same for Herself and the young'un.

Keep writing. Especially the personal, close-to-the-bone stuff. I'm at work on antoher one, also dealing with a childhood issue. Seems to be what happens when fatherhood looms or at least chases you.

Gave your name to Erika, who's working on something that may require her (poor dear) to head KW-way to hop a six-pack charter with her husband and try and pull something out of the Stream. She's also on the Al-Madrid site now, so tell her whatever you can with a liabiity clause...

I'll be back. Been too busy with too many things. Still a great board filled with great people.
What's with the knee?

Best, an bon chance,
Hijo
