He had had a fight with Pauline after a partyand couldn't find the keys and so shot the lock. I think. I'll try to check after work, too.

Hi Erika,
Saw your comment/question to Peter about Hem shooting open his door...doesn't ring a bell right off but I'll do some checking.

Hi Erika (and Peter)
In Reynolds' Hemingway in the 1930's there is a section on page 239 that is the first mention of Toby/Otto Bruce. It says "When Ernest and Patrick left Piggot with their newly hired driver, young Toby Bruce, at the wheel, Pauline remained at the Pfeiffer home for a few more days before going to her St. Louis dentist and then on to New York City."

Also in Charles Oliver's Ernest Hemingway A to Z he mentions that Hemingway met Bruce through the Pfeiffer's in Piggot.

He definitely did the cross country drives for Hemingway out west, but I think they first met him in Piggot.

Let me know what you have on your end Peter.

I don't have books here, but I think Hemingway met Toby Bruce when Bruce worked on a dude ranch in Montana. His real first name is Otto which leads me to believe he is of German extraction. His son "Dink" goes to some of the conferences, but I've lost touch with him.

I just uploaded a blurry photo of Bruce in the Photos section for you. He's in the coat and tie with the rest of the Hemingway family.

http://ehemingway.ning.com/photo/albums/toby-bruce-1940

It came from Lloyd Arnold's book "High on the wild with Hemingway" and was taken in 1940. There are a few others in that book of Bruce taken at the same time, but this one should give you an idea of his appearance.

I'm pretty sure he was from Piggot, Arkansas and was friends with Pauline Pfeiffer's family when the Hemingway's hired him on as driver, etc.

Hope that helps.
