Ernest Hemingway's semi-autobiographical "Nick Adams stories" formed the basis for this epic-length 1962 tribute to the master storyteller, with Richard Beymer ('West Side Story') as Nick and, amidst a star-studded supporting cast, Paul Newman in a Golden Globe nominated performance as the punch-drunk ex-prizefighter known as The Battler.
Before Hemingway could write about life, he had to live it to the fullest - as does his fictional persona, the teenager Nick Adams (Beymer), who leaves his Michigan lake country home on foot in 1916 to learn about life and love and death. Nick's journey of discovery commences with run-ins with a brutal train brakeman and the half crazed Battler (Newman); takes him to New York and then finally to World War I and Europe, where he receives his baptism of fire at the Italian front and finds romance with a hospital nurse, Rosanna (Susan Strasberg).
Ricardo Montalban, Eli Wallach, Diane Baker, Dan Dailey, Jessica Tandy and Arthur Kennedy give vivid performances in this Golden Globe nominee for Best Motion Picture - Drama, a story of adventure, of love, and of one man maturing through suffering as learns the laws of life.
